I got to show sps my new digs today, and tell him how much happier I am here. Maybe I shoulda kept my mouth shut.

After I got back from seeing him off to his bus, I started making sandwiches to take to work for lunch tomorrow. Only, the butter knife wasn't on the butter dish where I'd left it. I didn't think much of it at first, as the maids often move things around in inconsistent ways.

So, I reached into the cutlery drawer, only to find that ALL of the non-steak eating knives and all of the dinner forks were gone. I finished making my sandwiches (having to spread mayo with a steak knife) and then headed down to the front desk to ask them WTF.

The guy at the front desk didn't have much more to say that "This sometimes happens. We can get you a new set from the restaurant, but they're now closed for the day, and I don't have a key. Ask tomorrow at breakfast, and we'll give you a new set."

Mystified, but somewhat mollified, I went back to my room, only to discover the door wouldn't lock. Now, depending on how you count, this door has about 4 locks. The deadbolt has NEVER worked (a thing of which I complained about on my first day here) as it misses the necessary hole by a good 1/8 of an inch.

There's also one of those hotel latches that can keep a door from opening more than a couple of inches, or can keep it from locking in case of a party.

There's also the main lock which is kinda two in one. It normally locks on door closing and can be opened by the key. Or, you can push in a button on the inside and then it won't allow a key to go in the lock from the outside.

Well, of these the latch was the only thing working right. The deadbolt was still dead and the button kept popping out on the other lock. Now, that's of some slight concern as the first day a maid tried to come in to make up the room while I was still asleep, and only the latch kept her out.

So, I fiddled with the door to try to get the lock button to work and managed to make the entire door fail. It refused to stay closed AT ALL. I could use the latch to limit it to opening 3 inches, but that was all.

I called the front desk and they sent someone up, but he wasn't the maintenance guy (who had already left for the day) and couldn't do anything. So, after he left I got out my screwdriver and played with the door latch some more and after an enormous amount of effort and swearing, got the door to actually click shut so it would stay shut. With a bit more heaving and swearing, I even got the button on the damn door to go in.

So, now my only worry is that the maintenance guy will proclaim that everything is working when he comes to fix the lock in the morning.

I figure that its the (just barely) more humid weather we've had the last few days that has caused something in the door or jamb to swell and a tolerance that had been barely adequate for the door to function is now completely inadequate.

In any case, I now need to calm down so that I can get to sleep. Its already over an hour past my bedtime.
