Woke up half an hour before the alarm this morning, so I have a few moments to catch up on my reading and to post. Not really surprising that I got up early as I conked out not long after my last post. I just couldn't keep my eyes open. I guess there's been one too many nights of low sleep recently.
So, anyway I got around 10 hours sleep as a result, and that's helped a bunch, I'm sure. My motel room has a fridge, microwave and coffee maker with enough coffee for about 2 cups in the morning. I didn't use it the first day because I didn't have any cream and I wasn't about to try it black with the quality of the water here in Santa Clara (turns out I was right about that). Now that I know where the nearest convenience store, pharmacy, and super market are (all easy walking distance), it was easy to pick up some cream, which I am now using.
So, I'm not exactly settled into any kind of routine here, but I am feeling my way around. The motel has a free breakfast buffet, but I'm unsure of how often I'll have breakfast there. There just doesn't seem to be a huge variety of choice. They also don't have any cream. So if I go down for breakfast there, I have the choice of low-fat or no-fat milk. Neither is really what I want.
One block away there's a Carrows restaurant where I can get a good real breakfast, but its probably not in my budget to eat there every day. Especially not until I've started getting paid. I'm hopeful that that will go smoothly, but there have been two paperwork snafus so far, so I'm not going to count on it until the first check is cashed and in my bank account. I must say that all the people I've met so far here in California have been incredibly nice and have all hated paperwork, yet it seems that the folks can't help but build institutions (Corporations, Govt) which impose huge paperwork requirements on themselves.
As to the paperwork mess, it turns out that the guys in the office who failed to file the paperwork I needed are currently in the middle of a Florida Hurricane, so maybe they have a reasonable excuse on that front... Besides, it now looks like its all taken care of (crosses fingers).
And now I think I might wander off in search of breakfast. I'm not in any huge hurry this morning because I discovered yesterday when I arrived at work for 9:45 that no one was there yet. Until I get my security badge, I need to have someone escort me from the front door to my cubical. Yesterday I waited until 10:30 but that was mostly because I only knew two people and they both happened to show up later than planned.
The route to work is also quicker and easier than expected. Partly because the busses here seem quite efficient and partly because I'm not a car, and thus don't have to walk the extra two blocks it takes to get to the parking lot of SC4. Instead I can just walk through the front gate and around to the entrance. MUCH quicker!
And now... breakfast!
