So, Betty, our feisty retired nurse neighbor who has fought pirates on the open sea and smuggled $20,000 worth of drugs to the Red Cross in Mongolia heard that we were feeling a bit down due to our basement flooding. She came over with a bottle of 80 proof Polish mead.

I ended up having 3-4 little glasses of the delicious stuff and right now I am feeling no pain. I've always wondered if I would enjoy mead. I think the my final answer here is a resounding YES!

I agree that Betty is cool and a great neighbour.

But, for best neighbours evar, [livejournal.com profile] xipetotec and [livejournal.com profile] blacksquiggles rate really high in the good neighbour department. Remember, they took care of our cats when we went to Denmark and drove me to the doctor when I had that weird visual migraine. On the other hand, they are somewhat less neighbours, since they don't live just one house away, like Betty.

Mead is good, I tell you, good!

Though I must say that if by "80 proof" you mean 80% alcohol then it sounds more like pure ethanol with a dash of honey than "real" (as in "only fermented") mead ;)

Especially considering that yeast usually dies around 12-18 vol% alcohol ;)
There are yeasts that should be able to go up to 24+% but those are mainly for doing spirits that are distilled.

Do you know if the mead she brought was mixed with some kind of other alcohol after fermentation? It's not uncommon, but I've never heard of anyone taking mead up to 40% before.
