Train 999 Nonstop, Northbound, Forever

Here's a description of an idea for a train that never stops. Instead passenger loading/unloading cars riding on top of the train are attached/detached at stations as the train roars through at full speed.

My plan was to do this laterally, perhaps even with multiple speed grades. I'm not sure why vertical is better?
