swestrupYou know, I *want* to like the UK SF show "Primeval", really I do. Its about a group of scientists that are investigating a series of time-space anomalies that keep appearing in the UK. They show up for a few minutes to a few days, allow some random dinosaur or other ancient creature to escape into our time, and then vanish. The team has to find the anomalies, figure if anything has come through, and if so, find it and deal with it.
I like the premise. The CGI is pretty good, since the TV series was practically invented as a vehicle to promote the CGI work of the folks who did the groundbreaking "walking with dinosaurs" series of documentaries. The science behind the critters is also not bad.
What stinks is the writing. The team doing the investigation is ludicrous, the 'scientific' members of the team don't seem to have a grasp of their own professions, never mind any common sense. The actions of everyone, given what they know, never make any sense. In short, it has some of the worst writing I've seen in ages.
Case in point, they've just gotten their new 'Anomaly Detector' online. An anomaly opens for about 2 minutes and they're still narrowing down the location when it winks out again, and they lose the signal. Someone demands to know the location, as close as they got it. The man at the detector (whose been watching a terminal the entire time) hands the director a piece of paper that's been sitting on his desk the whole time. What, the coordinates just teleported onto the paper? He's psychic and wrote down where it would appear yesterday? WTF? Stuff like that happens ALL the time.
Frankly I'm only still watching it because A) Hannah Spearritt is awfully cute and B) some of the monsters are pretty nifty.
