Today...

I've got a bunch of things planned to do today. That includes calling my family in fire-ravaged BC and try to see if they're even there and if the house is still standing. I also have to call my ISP and find out about activating my e-mail accounts, something I've never bothered with before.

BUT the big thing for today is to get serious about job and/or career. I've been going to the various internet job sites for the last month and its pretty clear that if I want a low-paying soul-destroying job, there's plenty out there. If I want to make what I was making before OR find some job satisfaction, I'm pretty much out of luck.

My new plan is to forget about the internet job sites and go with a two-pronged approach. First I'll research all of the high-tech companies in Montreal that are doing things I would be interested in, and I'll cold-mail them my Resume with a cover letter. At least this way I will be able to show some enthusiasm to a human resources drone if I get an interview. (Company suggestions are welcome).

The second prong of my plan is to apply for a government grant and start my own company. Goodness knows between [livejournal.com profile] _sps_ and I, we've come up with dozens of viable ideas for high-tech companies in the past. This is going to involve a steep and somewhat unpleasant learning curve as I teach myself to navigate the Federal Bureaucracy, but if I can make myself learn HTML I figure I can force myself to learn Red-Tape.
I've already bought a directory of Federal granting agencies. (A Quebec directory also exists, but only in French, and grant applications would undoubtedly need to be in French as well. I think I'll wait on this till I've learned something about the Federal way of doing things.)

But first, I need to shower and rustle up some breakfast...

Sleep is good but I think I slept too much. I even had this plan that involved a leisurely breakfast at a nice restaurant and a casual stroll to do some shopping and banking and stuff. Now I look at the time and its all gone pants. I'll have to replan everything now.

It all reminds me of a favorite Warner brothers cartoon that starts with two very fat mice sitting on a pile of cheese in a cheese factory:

Mouse 1: "Do you want some cheese?"
Mouse 2: "No, no, no more, please."
Mouse 1: "Do you think you will ever want cheese again?"
Mouse 2: "I can't imagine it."
Mouse 1: "In an average lifetime, a mouse eats about 1/2 pound of cheese. I figure that last night we lived 2000 years."
Mouse 2: "Thats IT then, there's no reason to go on."
Mouse 1: "Lets find a cat and get him to eat us."
Mouse 2: "Right".

Of course the attempts by the mice to get eaten by the cat drives the cat to paranoia. He finally realizes he will never be able to eat another mouse, and so tries to get the dog to kill him...
