So, the Japanese have finally built a piece of Mecha, and its for sale. Its touted as an emergency rescue vehicle, but the site is in japanese, so I don't know much more:
There's one for the It Was Only A Matter Of Time category ;).. seriously, they've been obsessed with the idea of mecha for a long time now, in popular culture.. (and, to a lesser extent, so have we).. and hey, overall it's a good idea, it's a natural extension and meshing of the 'armor', 'mechanized labor', and 'electronics' tech areas (thinking in a kind of Civ / Stars way here.. ) and as far as I was reading, it might have happened a lot earlier except that the military philosophy in the US was (until recently) the old standard of 'lots of cheap infantry', and is only now becoming more of a 'small, elite, well-equipped, highly trained, expensive force'.. I've been hearing that the US military is about four or five years away from prototyping an actual military 'exo-suit' that will incorporate some powered options.. nothing like this article shows, though, this is more like a personal tank ;). Very cool. And I have a sneaking suspicion it wasn't just developed because it'd be 'useful', but also (very much so) because the designers and the financers thought it was, well, cool.
