Feelin' Good.

I woke up feeling good today.
taxlady brought me my coffee in bed, which certainly helped to make me feel loved, but that's not the whole cause, for sure. The last week or so I've been feeling really optimistic, but I'm not sure why.
Money is tighter right now than it has ever been. All of the unexpected expenses of the basement flood have quickly added up, and although its
taxlady's busiest time of the year right now, her clients often don't pay her until they get their refunds, so the money isn't coming in too fast right now. And once the basement is fixed up again, we'll need to do a lot more work in purging, sorting and organizing to make the space usable.
Despite all that, I find I'm looking forward to each new day. Maybe its because its spring and there is now sunlight (although there ain't much today, looking out the window. In fact, I see the occasional snow flake...), or maybe because I have a feeling of accomplishment with regards to the basement. Its now all been painted, and today I'll apply the stucco to the one section of wall that needs it. I'm happy to say that although I'm a rank amateur I think I did a better job than would have been done by the 'professionals' that our insurance hired. Maybe because I care about what the final result looks like?
Its also possible that the
april_drawing challenge is having something to do with it. I feel better when I'm working on something creative. I'm currently drawing aliens (badly) for illustration purposes for a role playing game scenario that I started working on years ago.
denizsarikaya was going to be one of the players and the idea was shelved when she passed away. Still, I think the game idea has great potential and I'd love to actually get it ready to play some day.
In fact, maybe its because I've been reading OOTS lately, but I've been having a hankering to play some good old D&D again. Well, now that there's been several new versions of the rules since I last played, it would be good old new D&D. I think I played my first game in 1979. It was Christmas and Tim had gotten a boxed D&D starter set complete with pre-made characters and a scenario. Him, me and one other friend decided to sit down and play this new-fangled board game. I ended up GM because someone had to be, and I was willing to read the rules. The intro said that the fighter and the thief (or was it a ranger?) didn't need to read anything, but that the GM should read the rule book first. So I did. It took an hour while Tim and Serge kept getting more and more impatient.
Then we played. All I remember of the adventure was that it started at an entryway that was an old guard post. Two stirges had made a nest there, including the bones of the old guards. The fight was short and the players won easily. Then I told them that there was a leather pouch laying on top of the bones. I knew, of course, that it was the bonus pay the guards had been given to hold off the whateveritwas that had befallen the place. They, of course, did not.
They very cautiously approached the leather bag and treated it like it might be booby trapped. Suddenly I had an epiphany as I realized the potential inherent in the fact that I knew what was really going on, but they didn't! I've been hooked on GMing ever since. In fact, I've done it far more often than I've ever played a character. I was so taken with the game, and disappointed by the amount that was missing from the box set that I went out and purchased as much Advanced Dungeons and Dragons stuff as I could get my hands on. It took ages considering I had a high-schooler's budget, but I never regretted the money spent that way.
Today I woke up remembering when
_grey_knight rolled up a Ranger at the Simulations Group of Montreal and maxed out his hit points (and that's when a first-level ranger got 2 dice of hit points, but I don't remember how many sides they were. I could look it up, I guess. I still have that edition of the Player's handbook.) So, suddenly I have a strong desire to play a character in a good old dungeon crawl again. I used to always play some sort of magic using character, be it Mage, Cleric, Illusionist or Druid, but if the new 3.5 rules are any good, it should be possible to play a fighter now that isn't like every other fighter in the game. I just need to find someone running a game that wants a new player.

Date: 2007-04-06 02:18 am (UTC)I had the best luck / worst luck with hit points - I've had a fighter averaged 9 on 10 over 6 levels, with a 17 con that gave me 72 hit points - a real brute, catching fireballs for fun.
Then again, I've also had a Paladin with average con, have 16 hits at 4 lvl (fragile to say the least.) and an illusionist with average con had 6HP by 4th lvl... sad. Both ended badly.
Fond memories as well.
If you ever get the hankering to try one of those tele-remote gaming aids, you know where I can be reached...
