Shell has just announced that it has invented a viable method for extracting oil from oil shale, something the oil companies have been wanting to do for ages. Colorado has 1000 square miles of oil shale, which Shell says is good for about one trillion barrels of oil. Their technique is cost effective so long as oil is above US$30 a barrel (its currently at $71), and uses 1 unit of energy for every 3.5 units of energy the recovered oil contains.
