Ha! Power supply problems are solved. After finally coming to the conclusion that either the power supply (most likely) or the power switch (least likely) on
taxlady's computer was dead, I removed the power supply and gave it to her to take down to the local computer store (
http://www.microbytes.com) to buy a replacement. While she was at it, I also had her pick up a replacement for her CPU fan which was only occasionally spinning.
She returned with a shiny new power supply and informed me that they had tested the old one at the shop and it was, indeed, quite dead. The replacement fan she brought didn't have the same kind of connector as the old one (fans these days are connected to the MB, not directly to the power supply) but a bit of surgery with wire cutters and electric tape, and I had the new fan happily installed and spinning. Then we were FINALLY able to test her new 256MB RAM sticks, only to discover one is bad (It keeps reporting random amounts of memory anywhere from 320MB to 920BM). Still, that means I can install the new DIMM along side her old ones for now, so she has 384MB which isn't a huge amount, but will let me install XP on the new drive for her.
Its taken a day more than it should have, but its looking like I'll manage to get things fixed by the end of the weekend. More important, its looking like I'll be able to go install that 4GB hard drive in a friends computer tomorrow, and maybe go to supper with another friend. I certainly feel like I could use some pleasant social time devoid of serious worry.
In fact, I would be downstairs installing XP right now, but a client is here talking taxes with
taxlady so I'm doing my part and making myself scarce.
