Waking up -- Darn!
May. 22nd, 2004 04:45 pmI'm awake now. I had a goood nights sleep. So good I'm kinda sorry its over. Lets see if I can recap my last few days:
Stayed up so late Wednesday night that it was about 4:00 pm Thursday when I finally hit the sack.
Woke up at 2:00 am EARLY friday morning after 'only' 10 hours sleep. Still felt dead tired, but couldn't get back to sleep. I did try though. I kept trying until around 6:00 am when I said 'Fuckit' and started my day. Said day involved some puttering around on the computer for a few hours, installing some optional firewall features that aren't on the main todo list, but I didn't feel like tackling the next Todo item. Besides, I had told
_sps_, that I would attend his demo downtown at 2:00 pm, which means I needed to catch a 12:00 bus, and I didn't want to get caught up in something and loose track of time. I REALLY didn't want to miss this Demo because
_sps_'s friend Julie would be there, and I had never met her, despite having sort-of introduced them.
See, sometime around 1996, I came across an article online about a mathematician who was doing startling work in the visualization of mathematics and mathematical structures. I sent
_sps_ a copy of the URL and he started corresponding with the author. That was Julie. They've been friends ever since, but Julie is seldom in this half of Canada (she was working in BC until recently), so I've never before had the chance to meet her. Its kind of funny, since I usually have mental images of folks that in no way match their actual looks when I finally meet them, I've been developing the habit of imagining, just before I meet someone for the first time, that they are hideously ugly or something. That way, I'm never disappointed in what they really look like, and I have no trouble banishing the fantasy image in favor of the real one. Strangly enough, except for the glasses, Julie looked EXACTLY as I had always imagined her (and not at all like the uglified version I was trying to hold in my head...)
The demo went okay, and was much as I expected, although I have now got to sit in the vibrating chairs that show up in one of the images in
_sps_'s journal.
Julie was fun to talk to, and it transpired that although
_sps_ was likely visiting me for the weekend (as he did -- he's here now), he had told
nancyrihakova that he was willing to show up at her and
denizsarikaya's place for a round of Catan. So, all three of us headed over there. Of COURSE there were complications. Not only was I now quite loopy from lack of sleep, poor
denizsarikaya was even worse, because she'd been up longer. What's more, due to plan mutation
nancyrihakova was out with
azrhey at a movie (TROY -- See their individual journals for their impressions), and didn't arrive back at base until an hour or so after we got there.
Anyway, in the end there were six people there at the same time (and momentarily seven when
taxlady showed up to drive
_sps_ and I home, and to give Julie a lift back to her Hotel), and we ended up spending the evening eating good oriental food (chinese and thai) and talking about all and everything. Something like 3 or 4 of us were loopy from lack of sleep, but I think we still (somehow) managed to make a good impression on her. This could have consequences though, as she needs a new base of operations for a few months, and Montreal and Finland currently seem to be the two main contenders for her presence...
Anyway, in the end it was a very enjoyable evening and I'm glad I made the effort to finally meet the Julie.
