My office is now much cleaner than it has been for years, but still no sign of my passport. I am going to have to widen the search, but now my estimates of finding it in any reasonable time seem remote. I guess I'm going to have to go get a replacement...

You will likely have to swear before a commissioner of oaths or something that you have lost your passport. They may just issue you a tamporary passport, which will have to be renewed soon, just in case they discover you're involved in passport shenanigans. If it has to be reissued after the temporary one expires, you'll probably have to get all your visas reissued, but if you only need it for three months or so, that won't be a big problem, since they'll probably expire before your temporary passport. It will probably cost money to get this all done quickly, too. Start soon. Make suer you're back in Quenec within three months (even if only for a weekend) or your medicare will expire. And make sure your employer there provided medical insurance -- Quebec medicare is a joke when confronted with US medical costs.

Most of this is now irrelevant since I found my passport. Tomorrow I'll be arranging for full medical insurance while I'm there.
