I and others used to message each other all the time back at Waterloo (university). I remember learning to use the old CMS (Conversational Monitor System) to send a "Hi there!" message to a friend with a text arrow pointing to the left or right, depending upon which side I was sitting. The friend would look up in surprise, and see me waving.
